Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology service (PGI/HS) was established in “Arabkir” JMC – ICAH in 2004 after joining  of Republican Pediatric Hospital and  “Arabkir” Medical Center. Our activity and collaboration with “Arabkir” JMC has been started since 1995, firstly in the field of Portal Hypertension (PH) and liver diseases.

PGI/H service provides diagnostics, treatment and follow-up service for children with wide range of gastroenterological and hepatological disorders until age of 18 within the state beneficial package.

- Gastroduodenitis, peptic ulcers. gastro esophageal reflux/disease 
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Nonspecific ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
- Failure to thrive/ Malabsorbtion/ Celiac disease
- Pediatric Gastrointestinal Emergencies (GI bleeding etc)
- Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Gastrointestinal and Nutritional Issues in Cystic Fibrosis
- Constipation
- Extra-intra hepatic portal hypertension (early detection, preventive endosclerotherapy,  surgical correction)
- Neonatal cholestasis
- Biliary /liver  anomaly
- Gall-stone disease
- Chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis
- Acute/chronic liver failure


Current activities:

Clinical:

- In-patient: hospitalization,  consultations, management and treatment of GI/H patients in different departments of “Arabkir” MC-ICAH
- More than 30 cases of PH have been revealed and followed  up till now, endosclerotherapy was established, several porto-systemic shunting, partial splemectomy,  surgical correction of biliary tract anomalies were performed with assistance of European (Prof. D. Yesenbert; T.Chapell) and Russian (Prof .V.Senjakovich) surgeons.
- Out-patient:
-   Long-term follow-up of patients with chronic GI/H disorders with clinical and laboratory evaluation and treatment.
-  Consulting and treatment  of the primary outpatients
- Diagnostic services:
- Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, polypectomy, biopsy, endosclerotherapy and other endoscopic procedure
- liver biopsy
- a full range of modern laboratory and imaging GI investigations (Stool-antigen test, Stool-elastaza-1 test, t –TGA test , duplex sonography,  X-ray  examinations, prophylometry etc.).
- Collaboration with GI departments of other children hospitals.
- Regular visits to the different regions of Armenia for  consultations, organization of referrals  (if needed).

Educational :

- Lectures and seminars for YSMU students and doctors.
- Guidelines and handouts for pediatricians, family doctors and residents (Malabsorbtion syndrome in children (2007 in armenian and russian,); Coeliac disease (2008);Gastroesophageal reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease, in children 2010). in armenian.
- Regular visits to the regions of Armenia for providing lectures,seminars for the staff
There was a close collaboration with Prof.  David Shmerling (Emeritus Head of Gastroenterology Department of University Children’s Hospital, Zurich, Switzerlandduring) during 2001-2005. Annual GI seminars and meeting for pediatricians, familial doctors, residents have  been organized.

In Arabkir MC-ICAH :

- GI/H Summer School  of  ESPAGHAN was privided in 2007;  
- The International Conference “Liver Diseases: Medical and Surgical Issues” in cooperation with the University Hospital of Antwerp - in 2009.
