Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus

Endocrinology is a branch of medicine, which studies the physiology and pathology of endocrine glands functioning. One of the most widespread problems of this discipline is Diabetes mellitus which is especially important and currently in focus in children.
The Endocrinological Service in Arabkir JMC&ICAH provides counseling and treatment to children and adults with endocrinology problems. A key component of the Service is the diabetology project, which has been implemented since 1996 with the support of SEMRA Foundation (Switzerland). The objective of the project is to provide human insulin, contemporary devices for self-control for children with diabetes as well as to ensure the monthly monitoring of the health status of the registered children to prevent possible complications. Diabetes School functions within the frameworks of the project. The activities conducted at the school are aimed at providing educational trainings on self-control methods, appropriate diet and other relevant topics for children and their parents. The children provided our services spend their summer vacation at Aparan Summer Recreational Camp, where all the necessary conditions to promote their social integration and independence are created. At the camp children administer insulin to themselves, monitor the level of glucose in the blood independetly, participate in different physical and pastime activities.
The staff involved in the project has been trained at the University Clinics in Switzerland.
Since 2005 neonatal screening on early identification and treatment of hypothyroidism in newborns has been realized in Arabkir JMC&ICAH. The identified patients are provided with follow-up service at ArBeS HCC.
