Rheumatology
Pediatric Rheumatology service in Arabkir Joint Medical Center & Institute of Child and Adolescent Health was established in April 2005. Our main goal is to improve the quality of care provided to the pediatric patients with different rheumatic diseases. To realize our goal we have developed the following strategy:
to improve the knowledge and skills in Pediatric Rheumatology having our staff trained in some specialized centers and departments in foreign countries,
to improve and enlarge the diagnostic possibilities as well as to increase the rate of early diagnosis of rheumatic diseases,- to increase the referral rate and the availability of medications for all rheumatic patients,
to improve the quality and to increase the availability of rehabilitative care, especially physical therapy for the majority of patients, in particular for those with joint diseases.
Specialty areas
At present we provide specialized medical care to the patients under the age of 18 with the following rheumatic diseases:
- Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Spondyloarthropathies
- Systemic connective tissue diseases as Systemic Lupus Erythematosous, Dermatomyositis etc.
- Different types of Systemic vasculitis
- Recurrent Fever syndromes other that FMF
The following laboratory tests and investigations required for the diagnosis and monitoring of different rheumatic diseases are performed at our center:
- routine lab tests as CBC, ESR, CRP, biochemistry, urinalysis etc
- estimation of Rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies and anti-dsDNA antibodies, complement C3 and C4
- conventional X-ray examination
- different types of tissue biopsies
Some other investigations as e.g. MRI, CT etc. are performed in other hospitals. Some specialized laboratory tests might be performed at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, thanks to the collaboration program between Arabkir JMC-ICAH and UCHZ.
We closely cooperate with rehabilitation specialists and orthopedists.

- Juvenile Arthritis Fund for Armenian Children (JAFAC), USA. Medical representative Dr. Alan Karibian. JAFAC kindly support our out-patient clinic for some medications provided to our patients free of charge.
- VAD Association, Switzerland
- the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. In frames of this project Dr. G. Poghosyan was trained in the Pediatric Rheumatology Department at UCHZ for three months in 2006
