Traumatology & Orthopedics

The Department of Pediatric Trauma, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (PTORD) has a long history of providing high quality care to patients with musculoskeletal disorders. It is one of the leading departments not only in Armenia, but in the region and CIS countries. Many patients from neighbor countries such as Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, and Iran come to this Department for surgical treatment and rehabilitation.

Specialty areas

The PTORD specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents with congenital and acquired problems of musculoskeletal system. It provides care to patients with all kinds of trauma. The department also focuses on the treatment of children with general orthopedic and neuromuscular disorders, including cerebral palsy, polio residuals, myelomeningocelle, as well as congenital limb deformities and malformations.
During last few years new surgical and conservative approaches were applied in the treatment of congenital club feet and development hip dysplasia, muscle releases and tendon transfers.
Since 2001 the PTORD initiated the spine surgery program in cooperation with the colleagues from the USA and France. The program includes clinical evaluation, bracing and the surgical treatment of children and adolescents with congenital, developmental and neuromuscular spine deformities.
The Department provides services and care based on team approach and is working in close cooperation with rehabilitation centers and orthotic labs.

Our Collaboration

The PTORD has close relations with Shriner’s Hospitals for Children in Portland, Tampa and Minneapolis (USA), different hospital in France and Switzerland, Armenian communities in Chicago, Boston in USA, Lyon in France and London (UK). It also cooperates with local and foreign organizations and NGO’s such as OXFAM, UMCOR, UDE, Bridge of Hope, Sakura, Jinishian Memorial Foundation, Latter-Day Saint Charities and others.

Projects

The Department of Trauma, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation implemented several project including:

  • “Outreach Clinics Project in Armenia” in 1999, supported by UMCOR,
  • “Prosthetic-Orthotic Treatment for Disabled Children in Armenia” in 2000 supported by “Sakura” NGO and Japan Embassy in Russia,
  • “Orthopedic Help to Children in Armenia in 2002-2003 supported by “Jinishian Memorial Foundation”,
  • “Wheelchair Project supported by “Wheelchair for the World Foundation”.
  • At the present the staff of the Department is implementing the teaching project for surgeons and orthopedic fellows from different regions of Armenia. Within this project the outreach clinics were established in the same regions as well as some rehabilitation equipment was built and distributed for disabled children. The project is funded by “Jinishian Memorial Foundation”.
  • The Department has carried out the teaching and clinical project in Georgia to develop pediatric orthopedic services at the Iashvili Central Children’s Hospital in Tbilisi for recent 6 years.
  • Another ongoing project is carried out in cooperation with colleagues from Balgrist Orthopedic Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland. The main goal of this project is introduction of new treatment options for club foot and hip dislocation in children.
  • The Department has conducted the hip ultrasound screening project in some maternity hospitals in Yerevan since 2008. The aim of this project is early diagnoses of development hip dysplasia in newborns and early treatment.
