Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service
Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service (GI/H) at Arabkir JMC&ICAH provides diagnostics, management, treatment and follow-up of wide range of gastroenterological and hepatological disorders in children from infancy to adolescence. PGHS provides inpatient and outpatient care.
Inpatient service includes diagnostics and management of GI/H disorders, GI/H manifestations of metabolic diseases, Familial Mediterranian Fever (FMF) related GI/H disorders in all departments of “Arabkir” JMC-ICAH. Complicated surgical cases are consulted with specialists from other departments. Outpatient service includes long-term follow-up (up to the age of 18 years) of patient with chronic GI/H disorders in the Pedaitric GI/H dispensary. Currently we manage more than 100 GI/H patients which are under regular control with clinical and laboratory evaluation (government beneficial package) and treatment correction every 3-6 months.
Specialty Areas
We started our activity in 1995, firstly in field of Portal Hypertension and Liver Disorders. Then our services were extended and the service was established in 2004 when Republican Children’s Hospital joined the “Arabkir” Medical Center.
We provide comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of children with:
- Gastroduodenitis
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
- Congenital malformation of gastrointestinal and billiary tract (management after surgery)
- Short bowel syndrome
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s disease, Indeterminned Colitis)
- Celiac disease
- Malabsorption / Failure to thrive
- Pediatric Gastrointestinal Emergencies (GI bleeding etc.)
- Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Constipation
- Portal Hypertension (early detection, preventive endosclerotherapy and porto-systemic shunting)
- Congenital bile duct and liver anomalies
- Gall-stone disease
- Autoimmune Liver Disease, Liver Cirrhosis
- Liver Failure

- Stool antigen test for Helicobacter pylori
- Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies IgA (t-TGA IgA) for Celiac disease
- Stool elastase test – to evaluate exocrine function of pancreas

2001-2006 we had close collaboration with Professor David Shmerling, Zurich, Switzerland. With his very professional support and active personal participation the annual GI seminars and meeting for period from 2001 till 2005 were organized, which helped us to establish our Pediatric GI/H service.
2001-2008 a number of porto-systemic shunting operations were done under support and supervision of surgeons from different countries (Russia - prof. Senjakovich; Antwerp Children's University Hospital - Dr. Dirk Yesenbert, Dr. Thierry Chapel).
From 2008 to 2009 three successful porto-systemic shunting operations were performed by our surgeons - Dr. P.Geyikyan, head of the surgical service Dr. Sahak Arakelyan and head of director board prof. Ara Babloyan.
We were honored and pleased to organize and participate in ESPAGHAN Summer GI School held in Yerevan on July 5-7, 2007, where many up to date topics and complicated cases were discussed.
